Coaches

At Barn Owls Volleyball Club, we take tremendous pride in the exceptional coaching staff we have assembled. Each of our coaches boasts an impressive background as former high-level competitors, bringing a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the table. With their guidance and mentorship, our athletes have the opportunity to elevate their game and pursue a future in volleyball at the post-secondary level.

Our coaching team is comprised of individuals who have dedicated their lives to the sport and understand the unique challenges and demands faced by aspiring student-athletes. They have walked the very path our athletes strive to traverse, gaining invaluable experience along the way. Their firsthand understanding of the game, combined with a deep passion for teaching and nurturing talent, sets them apart from the rest.

Jason Friesen

Jason was a setter at Douglas College, winning back-to-back provincial BCAA titles. After his playing days, Jason coached various boys and girls teams at the club, provincial and BC Games levels. Most recently Jason was the Head Coach of the Barn Owls Boys 16U team.

Norm Hanson

Kyle Joslin

Kyle was a setter for the College of the Rockies and the University of Manitoba before playing professionally in Switzerland. He is a former assistant coach for the UBCO Men’s Volleyball Team, and since becoming a full time ‘Chip Guy’, he has helped coach KSS and the Barn Owls at the 15U and 16U level. He also has the best hair in Kelowna.

Barb Kilpatrick

Barb played middle for the Langara College Falcons (kaw-kaw!) before transitioning to the beach game where she became a provincial champion (sniff) and developed a mean air guitar. After moving home to Kelowna she coached multiple KVC teams and subsequently the 2019 Barn Owls Girls 12U. She has recently coached for Canyon Falls Middle and is currently the head junior coach at OKM. This past summer, Barb placed 3rd at the Seaside Beach Volleyball Tournament in the ‘Old Lady Division’… she’s still killing it!

Ken Kilpatrick

Coach Ken played in the BCCA at Douglas College earning All-Canadian honours. Ken then moved on to play at UBC-Vancouver. After Ken followed the love of his life back to Kelowna he spent a few seasons as a KVC and KSS volleyball coach. Most recently Ken has been coaching with the OKM Junior Girls team.

Brian Kroschinsky

Coach Brian is a proud graduate of George Elliot Senior Secondary where, under legendary coach Doug Meraw’s leadership, the Dominoes were two time provincial bronze medallists. Brian went on to play four years at the University of Alberta aiding the Golden Bears to two podium finishes. In recent years (relatively speaking) he has assisted with three of the medalling KSS Senior Boys teams, but he is obviously most proud of coaching the 2023 Barn Owls Boys 13U team to a provincial gold medal.

Darryl McCrady

John McParland

John played collegiate volleyball at Langara College and at the university level for UBC Vancouver. John is a teacher in the Central Okanagan School District where he has been coaching for over 20 years. He is currently coaching the KSS Junior Boys after the past 20 seasons at the senior boys level. John has completed a Master’s degree in Coaching and Athletic Administration. John still competes today, touching a high 8’9’' on his spike touch.

Michael Sodaro

Mike played 3 years of volleyball in Kelowna at OUC where his team won a Bronze medal at Nationals. He has been coaching in Kelowna for over 20 years, and has been involved with a variety of age groups ranging from 11 to 18 years. Presently, Mike is the head coach of the 3-time AAA Provincial Championship Senior Boys KSS Owls. As the President of the Barn Owls Volleyball Club, Mike oversees the excellent team of coaches at our volleyball club.
